What is the best time of day for a photo session.

If you are thinking about a photo session for portraits or getting married and need to capture those special moments then it is a good idea to consider the best time of day to do so.

For a cloudy day with no harsh shadows the time of day isn’t that important as the light will be soft but if the day is bright and sunny, then you should know what time of day is best for your photography.

On bright cloudless sunny days, you will find that around midday is not the best time to shoot any images. The lighting is directly from above and very harsh. You will get harsh shadows below the eyes and if the person has dark eye makeup, it will be even worse. The hours to avoid are between 11:00am and 2:00pm and even later if you can.

There is a golden hour and generally that time is usually between 4:00pm and 9:00pm depending on the time of year. During winter, the golden hour may be around 4:00pm and summertime around 8:00 and even later. The image below was taken at 8:31pm with a setting sun and a tungsten light pointed at the couple to highlight their faces. The same sort of photo taken in the middle of the day just wouldn’t have the same appeal. Shadows would fall below the eyes and may result in an ugly image.

The following image was taken at 9:40pm on the same day in January last year. The dark blue sky just looks terrific and can really make an image.

It is possible to take perfectly acceptable images at any time of day given the right equipment, technique and location but early in the morning or later in the day can just give that extra sparkle to your images.

If you are planning a wedding, it is a good idea to talk with your photographer before working out your timeline for the day after all, you want the best images you can get for your special day.

Storm the Stage

“Storm the Stage is a national musical and drama competition for young performers between 16 and 19 years of age who have a talent and passion in this area.” The preceding quote is from this years programme held on Saturday 8th October, 2011 at the beautiful Playhouse Theatre in Hobart, Tasmania.

I was asked to photograph the event and was glad I did. The young performers were all outstanding and most enjoyable to watch. There were numerous performers all trying for a place in the national finals to be held in Brisbane on Sunday 27th November, 2011 at the Powerhouse Theatre.

Unfortunately, there can only be three representatives from Tasmania and congratulations must go to the three who made it through. The finalist winners on Saturday were Rebecca Riley, Terri Ryan and Camilla Best.

Congratulations must also go to the Rotary Club of City Central Hobart and all the volunteers who made Storm the Stage possible.

Wedding couples are spending up

wedding-photography-80Australian couples are spending up big for their special day with the average wedding costing $36,200, an increase of 6.5% over last year (2010-2011), according to IBISWorld.

While retail, property and many other sections of the economy are suffering a slowdown, spending on weddings is increasing.

According to IBISWorld  General Manager (Australia), Ms Karen Dobie, 119,000 Australian couples are expected to walk down the aisle in 2011, an increase of 0.8% on 2010.

“Other factors influencing the upwards trend in wedding spending include an increase in disposable incomes, financial assistance from parents, and the rising average age of couples walking down the aisle (29 for females, 32 for males) – meaning today’s couples are often in a stronger financial position before marrying.”

According to the IBISWorld report, 11.6% or $4,200 of the cost of a wedding is spent on wedding photography and 17.6% or $6370 is spent on flowers, stationary and other expenses. You can see the full report at IBISWorld.

All Dancesport images are now available

We have finally finished sorting, cataloguing, processing and uploading all the images from the 2011 Tasmanian Dancesport Championships.

There are over 4, 600 images from all events and these are accessible from either clicking the image to the left or the Dancesport link under the Galleries menu. Please feel free to have a good look around and if you like any of the images you can purchase them for a small fee. This fee is at least half of what you will get anywhere else and while we would like to make them free to download, we need to try and at least recover some of our costs for the weekend.

The dancing at this years event was certainly the best I have seen in Tassie before and I am already looking forward to how we can improve the photography for next year. Photographing dancers with varying lighting conditions and the speed of some of the dancers is certainly challenging. We don’t use any artificial flash as we believe this compromises the quality of the image apart from annoying the dancers. This makes getting decent shots even harder and processing longer but we believe the end result is worth it. - Enjoy
